Over the past year, works by authors were translated into languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Serbian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Latvian, and even Azerbaijani. The translations included award-winning prose, successful debuts, contemporary poetry, children's books, as well as documentary novels.
Most Translated Authors
The most translated author in 2024 was Simona Smatana Čechová. Three of her children's books (Beekeeper Joe, Frankie from the Compost Pile, Dung beetle Hugo) were published in Hungarian, and one was published in Korean (Elise Is Not a Monster). Nicol Hochholczerová (Ukrainian, Czech, English), Pavol Rankov (English, Hungarian, Polish), and Etela Farkašová (Polish, German, Macedonian) each had three translations. Books by Ivana Dobrakovová, Jana Bodnárová, Pavol Vilikovský, Katarína Kucbelová, Peter Šulej, and Beata Balogová were translated into two languages.
Most Active Language Regions
The highest number of translations—thirteen—were published in Hungarian. These included works by Balla, Jana Bodnárová, Jana Juráňová, Viliam Klimáček, Richard Pupala, Pavol Rankov, Simona Smatana Čechová, Peter Šulej, Pavol Vilikovský, and others. Translators included Peter Böszörményi, Ildikó Hizsnyaiová, Tünde Mészáros, Erika Vályi Horváth, and others.
Second place, with nine translations, went to Czech. Among these were Nicol Hochholczerová's book , Pavol Vilikovský's Letmý sneh / Fleeting Snow, Daniel Majling's graphic novel Gemer, and Ivana Dobrakovová's novel Pod slnkom Turína / Under the Turin Sun.
In 2024, eight books were translated into English with the support of the program, making English the third most active language region. Julia and Peter Sherwood translated Katarína Kucbelová's successful novel Č辱 / The Bonnet, Nicol Hochholczerová's debut Táto izba sa nedá zjesť / This Room is Impossible to Eat, and Ján Rozner's book Sedem dní do pohrebu / Seven Days to the Funeral. Magdalena Mullek translated selected short stories by Pavol Rankov, published under the title On the Other Hand, as well as short stories by Dušan Mitana, published as On the Treshold. Additionally, David Short translated Balla’s book Medzi ruinami / Among The Ruins, Charles S. Kraszewski translated Janko Jesenský's Cestou k slobode / On the Road to Freedom, and Jonathan Gresty translated Ivan Lesay's book Topografia bolesti / Topography of Pain.
In 2024, six translations were published in Serbian and five in Polish. Zdenka Valent Belić translated four titles into Serbian: ǰé by Beata Balogová, Hotel Balkán by Miroslava Kuľková, a selection of fairy tales by Pavol Dobšinský, and Dunaj - magická rieka / Danube – The MagicRiver by Michal Hvorecký. In Polish, translations of Klinika by Pavol Rankov, Hodiny lietania by Etela Farkašová, and ǰé by Beata Balogová were published.
The grant program, supported by the Literary Centre, has been operating since 1996. The current members of the Commission are Mária Ridzoňová Ferenčuhová (poet, translator, film theorist, and Commission chair), Magdalena Bystrzak (literary scholar), Peter Juščák (writer), Aňa Ostrihoňová (publisher and translator), and Marta Součková (literary scholar).
