After literary journalism and preparation as a poet in various magazines he entered artistic spheres with his first collection
Festivals of the Rams, revealing a modern non-traditional poet. His first two collections reflect the stance of a young person enchanted by love and its erotic expression. With regard to lexical aspects both collections overflow with the invention of new forms, indicating the poet`s sensitivity to the phenomenon of language. Moravčík is fascinated by the possibilities of his mother tongue. At the outset he was mainly inspired by themes of a young contemporary individual and his emotional life. Later in his work he drew motifs from the environment and the region of his roots. A deep and firm relationship to these native roots can be felt in his poems. He is permanently connected to Záhorie (a Western region) - not only linguistically, mentally, and psychologically but also in terms of resultant poetic motifs. He is one of few contemporary poets to have placed equal weight on the Záhorie dialect rather than the more traditional Central and Eastern ia.
In the second stage of his work he has deliberately focused on questions and problems from history and on searching the roots of society (in the collections
Moravian Venus, Painted Yokes and Nettling). At the beginning of the 1980`s he discovered the enchantment of work for children. His books for the youngest readers do not lack jokes and playfulness. In all of them he expressed himself as a master of language able to draw attention to and use the poly-semantic potential of words and the possibilities of sound painting. Moravčík is without any doubt a master of exploiting language possibilities to their limit.
In the area of prose he has concentrated on folk literature from his native Záhorie region. He used the rich Záhorie dialect in dozens of his stories and showed the colourful life of farmers and ordinary people from this region.
By his unusual artistic methods, by his non-traditional approach to themes and motifs, and by his mastery of language Štefan Moravčík has achieved an unquestioned place among the foremost authors of literature.
