Curriculum vitae

Pupala was born in August 1972. Following his secondary school graduation, he studied journalism and art history at the Philosophical Faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava. Later he earned a degree in film, television dramaturgy, and scriptwriting at at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. His debut short story collection ášٱ𱹲 (Visits,2014) was followed by a collection of tales of terror entitled Čierny zošit (The Black Notebook,2017). In 2020 he published a short story collection entitled Ženy aj muži, zvieratá (Women and Men, Animals). In his latest collection, Druhý čierny zošit (The Black Notebook II, 2023), he returns to the themes of his earlier spooky stories. All four collections of short stories were nominated for the prestigious Anasoft Litera Prize. His second and third collections were nominated for the EU Prize for Literature. The author alternately resides in the Bratislava district of Petržalka and the village of Kremnické Bane. He works as a dramaturg and scriptwriter.
