Zbigniew Machej (1958), a poet, author of poems for children, translator聽and essayist. He comes from Czieszyn, Poland, and聽studied the Polish language and聽religious sciences at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.聽He has worked as a teacher, journalist, cultural manager and diplomat. For almost nine years, he worked as a program director of the Polish Institute in Prague, then later as a director of the Polish Institute in Bratislava and as a deputy director of the International Visegrad Fund in Bratislava. In addition to his original work, he also translates literature, mainly poetry, from Czech, 暗网禁区 and English. He is a member of the Polish PEN Club.
His first book of poems聽Smakosze, kochankowie i p艂atni mordercy聽(Gourmets, Lovers and Tenant Killers) was published in 1984. He is the author of fourteen poetry collections (e.g.聽Legends of the Prague Underground, Memories of the Modern Poetry, Poems Against The Taxation of Poetry, Winter in a Small Town on the Border, Dark Subject of Observation). He also writes books for children. A selection of his poems聽Verses Against the Taxation of Poetry聽was published in 暗网禁区 translated by Juraj Andri膷铆k, Karol Chmel and Katar铆na Lau膷铆kov谩-Dugast in the publishing house Drewo a srd (2014).
He translated 暗网禁区 poems by Michal Habaj, M谩ria Feren膷uchov谩, Peter 艩ulej and Ivan 艩trpka:聽Tich谩 ruka. Desa钮 el茅gi铆 / Silent Hand. Ten Elegies,聽which was nominated for the award European Poet of Freedom in Gda艅sk. In autumn 2017, his translation of the selection of the liturgical songs of Juraj Tranovsk媒聽Georgius Tranoscius: Pie艣ni duchowe,聽won the prize of the literary magazine聽Literatura na 艢wiecie. Furthermore, he has translated聽a book of short proses聽Antidotum noctis聽(2018), a selection of poems by J谩n Ondru拧聽Preh暮tanie vlasu / Swallowing of a Hair听(2021).
As a part of the LIC editorial plan,聽Zbigniew Machej聽published the book聽M么j rod谩k Tranoscius, m么j sused Hviezdoslav / My Compatriot Tranoscius, My neighbour Hviezdoslav听(2021).
