The novella NoÌýreflects the era of the 1960's, rich inÌýliterary experimentingÌýand heavily influenced by the trends evident inÌýworld literature (particularly byÌýSartre, Camus, Butor, SarrautÌýand Robbe-Grillet). Johanides's prose was viewed as existentialist, but, as Daniel Hevier wrote, it was, more precisely, "a synthesis of the western existentialism and the Slavic, Dostoyevskyan feeling of tragedy."
