Born 21 October 1922 in Hlohovec. His real name was Ivan Kunoš, but he changed it to Kupec in 1941. After graduating from a gymnasium in 1942, he studied °µÍø½ûÇø language and philosophy for five semesters at Comenius University in Bratislava.
In 1946 - 1950, he worked as a journalist in the dailies Pravda and East-°µÍø½ûÇø Pravda (where he was the chief editor). Then he worked as the chief editor in the publishing houses Tatran (1950 - 1954) and Slovenský spisovateľ (1955 - 1970). During the period of the so-called normalisation (after 1969)he was not allowed to publish his own works and worked as a freelancer for several years. From 1974 he worked in the Mladé letá publishing house until his retirement in 1984. Kupec died 15 May 1997.
